U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Memphis, will assume a senior position on the House Judiciary Committee after Democrats officially retake that branch of Congress early next year.
Cohen, in a newsletter to constituents late last week, said he can’t wait. That’s because Cohen gets to go after U.S. Republican President Donald Trump.
Don’t expect Cohen to show fairness and objectivity — given his past vitriolic remarks about Trump and Republicans in general.
“It will once again be what the Founders intended it to be, ‘the People’s House,’ and no longer ‘the House of Trump,’” Cohen said in the email newsletter to constituents.
One of Cohen’s top priorities, he said, is “oversight of suspicious patterns of corruption we’ve seen but were powerless to investigate in Congress,” referring, presumably, to Trump.
“I look forward to playing an active role in that oversight as a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee,” Cohen wrote.
In the same newsletter, Cohen castigated Trump for firing former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and making Matthew Whitaker the acting replacement.
“The only reason he (Whitaker) was selected is that he will be a hatchet man, employing an open, notorious and blatant effort to stifle and control the (Robert) Mueller investigation and have its final report shielded from the public,” Cohen wrote.
Last year, as The Tennessee Star reported, Cohen couldn’t show enough self-restraint not to file Articles of Impeachment against Trump.
“The time has come to make clear to the American people and to this president that his train of injuries to our Constitution must be brought to an end through impeachment,” the congressman said at the time.
“I believe there is evidence that he attempted to obstruct an investigation into Russia’s interference with the U.S. presidential election and links between between Russia and the Trump campaign, most notably the firing of FBI Director James Comey.”
As The Star has also reported, Cohen’s animosity toward Republicans is intense.
Last month he accused conservatives of ‘making a fetish out their own supposed victimhood.’”
Cohen has previously said Tea Party supporters are no different than arsonists. He compared Republicans to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels for opposing Obamacare.
Cohen also said the Ebola virus would mutate into a Biblical-style plague that would devastate Tennessee— unless state Republicans in the Tennessee General Assembly complied fully with Obamacare and expanded Medicaid.
Cohen said he will also serve as a senior member on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

It’s an irony that Cohen labels State Republicans who don’t fully co operate with Obamacare as “Nazi propagandists” since Obamacare mandated that the people be forced to purchase a good or, in the case of the ACA law, a service. That is classic fascism. The Republican Congress did at least remove that fascist government mandate. If as they say, healtcare is a right, then government has no lawful power over our choices in that matter any more than it can force us to exercise the right of free speech or to keep and carry guns for self defense.
But like their political guru, Saul Alinksy instructed the leftists, “accuse others of what we do.”
Let the rest of America see how unworthy of respect he is both as a man and politician. His treatment of Starr Parker, a black, female conservative was disgraceful. Mr. Me too Important gets more important! LOL!
Looks like the dems have gone out of their way to put the biggest losers int heir party in the highest positions. Maybe they think they have a better chance of nailing Trump on something. But I think all they will accomplish is show independents and moderates how clueless, classless and demonic they really are, causing them to go down in flames in 2020, cementing another four years of MAGA. Certainly the radical members are already doing that, might as well as have the other ones follow.
